Why Centrelink pays every fortnight

Almost all Centrelink income support is paid fortnightly, which means every two weeks rather than once a month. That's why official rates are quoted per fortnight. To estimate a monthly figure, multiply the fortnightly amount by 26 and divide by 12 — not simply by two.

A single person on JobSeeker

A single person with no children can receive up to $833.70 a fortnight. If they rent privately, they may also get Rent Assistance of up to $223.80 a fortnight, depending on how much rent they pay. Income from work is assessed each fortnight and can reduce the payment.

A couple on JobSeeker

Each member of a couple can receive up to $763.00 a fortnight, so a couple where both qualify could receive up to $1,526.00 between them before any Rent Assistance. One partner's earnings can affect the other partner's payment.

A single parent

A single parent on JobSeeker with a dependent child can receive up to $892.80 a fortnight. A single parent on Parenting Payment can receive up to $1,087.20 a fortnight. Family Tax Benefit is usually paid separately and can make a big difference to the total a family receives.

A pensioner

A single person on the full Age Pension receives up to $1,237.70 a fortnight, and a couple up to $1,866.00 a fortnight combined. Many retirees receive a part pension because of their income or assets, so their fortnightly amount is lower.

A young person or student

Fortnightly amounts on Youth Allowance vary a lot. A young person living at home usually receives less than someone of the same age who has to live away from home, and parental income can also be taken into account. Check your category before relying on any figure you see online.

Do you get exactly 26 payments a year?

Usually yes — a year has 26 fortnights. Around Christmas and Easter your payment may arrive earlier than normal, which can make the gap until the next payment feel longer. It's the same money, just paid on a different day.

What can change your fortnightly amount

• Reporting income from work, even for a single fortnight.
• Starting or ending a relationship.
• Moving house or changing how much rent you pay.
• A child turning a certain age or leaving your care.
• Indexation increases on 20 March and 20 September.
