How SASSA payment dates work
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) pays millions of social grants every month. Not every grant is paid on the same day: payments are organised by grant type, so a pensioner and a parent receiving a child grant can be paid on different days in the same week.
This is why it's worth checking your own grant category instead of relying on a date a friend or neighbour shared. The schedule for each month is normally announced in advance.
Tip: always check the month and the grant type when you look at a payment calendar. An old calendar shared on social media may show dates that no longer apply.
Which SASSA grant are you checking?
SASSA administers several types of social assistance. Knowing exactly which one you receive makes it much easier to find the right date and amount:
- Older Persons Grant.
- Disability Grant.
- Child Support Grant.
- Foster Child Grant.
- Care Dependency Grant.
- War Veterans Grant.
- Grant-in-Aid, which is added to certain grants.
- Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, which follows its own schedule.
Why grants are paid on different days
The main permanent grants are usually spread across the first few working days of the month. Older Persons Grants are normally paid first, followed by Disability Grants and then the children's grants. Spreading payments helps reduce queues at pay points, shops and ATMs.
Weekends and public holidays can move these dates, so the exact days are not identical every month. The SRD grant is processed separately and is usually paid later in the month, once applications have been verified.
You don't have to collect on the first day
Once a grant is paid into your account, the money stays there. You don't lose it if you wait a few days, and avoiding the first-day rush can save you time in long queues.
How much does SASSA pay?
There is no single SASSA amount — each grant has its own value. Most permanent grants were increased from April 2026. For example, the Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant and Care Dependency Grant are now R2,400 a month, and the Child Support Grant is R580 a month. The full list is in our amounts guide.

- The SASSA toll-free contact centre.
- Your local SASSA office.
- Your bank or the Postbank, for the balance in your account.
Watch out for fake posts and scams
Messages promising "new grants", "extra payments" or "early release" spread quickly on WhatsApp and Facebook. SASSA does not ask you to pay a fee to receive a grant, and you should never share your PIN, card number or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you.
